Research and Evaluation

What is research?

Research is the systematic investigation of phenomena to establish facts, develop theories, and contribute to general knowledge. In education, research is often aimed at understanding how teaching methods, policies, or technologies affect learning. It seeks to generate new knowledge, answer specific questions, and explore hypotheses.

What is evaluation?

Evaluation, on the other hand, is the systematic assessment of the design, implementation, or outcomes of a program or project. In education, evaluation focuses on determining the effectiveness, value, or quality of educational interventions, teaching strategies, or curricula. It aims to provide feedback for decision-making and improvement, rather than contributing to theoretical knowledge.

Comparisons

Research aims to generate new knowledge and advance understanding. It is driven by curiosity or a need to test hypotheses. Research focuses on broader questions or problems and often seeks generalizable results. Evaluation is more specific to a particular program, policy, or context, and the findings are usually not intended to be generalizable but are specific to that context.

Contrasts

Research in your context might involve investigating the effectiveness of different STEM teaching methodologies across diverse educational settings, aiming to inform future practices broadly and contribute to the field of educational science. Evaluation would focus more on specific programs that are being implemented. Evaluations help make decisions about adjustments while research helps us innovate and explore new directions.
